Paper mache is an enjoyable activity for both kids and adults. While it requires some patience to dry fully, the result is a strong, durable creation that opens up endless crafting possibilities.

  • Scissors,
  • Newspaper,
  • Large plastic bottle (optional),

HOW TO MAKE A PAPIER MACHE VOLCANO BASE

Start by preparing a large batch of adhesive paste.

We used cellulose adhesive, which is similar in texture to wallpaper paste but child-safe as it contains no fungicide. It’s inexpensive, easy to mix with water, and kids love using it.

Alternatively, you can use watered-down PVA glue (mix equal parts glue and water) or make your own flour-and-water paste. Both options are simple and effective, with the PVA mixture being particularly strong.

If you’re planning to create a “live” volcano, cut the top off an old plastic bottle, leaving the lid on. Keep this top section to serve as a bowl for the lava mixture when your volcano is ready to erupt!

Place the bottle in the center of a large cardboard base. Scrunch up pieces of newspaper, dip them into the adhesive paste, and begin shaping your volcano by building up layers around the bottle. Ensure the structure is sturdy and resembles a classic volcano shape.

After shaping the main body of your volcano, use additional newspaper dipped in paste to cover the rest of the cardboard base. This will create a cohesive and textured surface, blending the volcano into its surroundings.

Tear the leftover newspaper into strips and use the adhesive paste to layer them over the volcano. This will create a smooth and sturdy surface. Apply at least 2-3 layers of newspaper strips for added durability and a polished finish. Allow each layer to dry slightly before adding the next.

The completed volcano should resemble this: a sturdy, textured structure ready for decoration. Allow it to dry thoroughly for a few days. To ensure even drying, elevate the volcano off the ground so the base and bulk can air out properly. Avoid placing it directly on furniture, as the wet underside could cause damage. We suggest covering a table with plastic sheeting and using items like large LEGO pieces or similar supports to lift the volcano while it dries.

HOW TO PAINT YOUR PAPER MACHE VOLCANO

Mix up some paint to bring your volcano to life! We chose a purple-brown shade and added gold glitter to give it a mineral-rich appearance. Apply the paint in layers, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding the next. This will create a vibrant and textured finish.

Once the base paint has dried, squeeze paint directly from the bottles to create lava runs around the top of the volcano. The girls had a blast watching the paint drip down the sides, mimicking flowing lava. To finish, add a few glitter trails for extra sparkle and to enhance the lava effect.

IDEAS FOR USING YOUR DIY PAPER MACHE VOLCANO

Our paper mache volcano lasted a solid 10 years! We initially added animals and rocks for imaginative play, but over time, the girls used it in countless scenarios. At one point, we even had a plant growing out of it! The volcano was also taken to school several times by all three of my girls for various topic projects. It’s amazing how such a simple craft can become a cherished and versatile part of their play and learning!

Eventually, we transformed the volcano into a Joules Island for a huge school project! We added crops around the base, a waterfall, wind turbines, and more, turning it into a mini ecosystem. It became a fantastic centerpiece for the project, showcasing the girls’ creativity and hard work!

In conclusion, this DIY paper mache volcano proved to be not only a fun and creative craft project but also a lasting, versatile piece that sparked imagination and educational play for years.
