ITALIAN MEATBALLS RECIPE

This simple meatball recipe comes together in about 30 minutes, making it a perfect option for a quick and satisfying weeknight dinner. These Italian meatballs are flavorful, tender, and incredibly easy to prepare!

INGREDIENTS

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
  • ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium yellow onion, grated
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For the Marinara Sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 (12 oz / 369 mL) can of tomato sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

Making the Meatballs:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and Parmesan until smooth. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and the egg/Parmesan mixture. Gently mix until everything is just incorporated—be careful not to overwork the meat.
  • Using your hands, an ice cream scoop, or two spoons, shape the mixture into about 20 medium-sized meatballs, or adjust the size as desired (cooking times may vary).
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter melts and sizzles. Add the meatballs and cook on one side for 1–2 minutes until golden brown. Flip and cook on the other side for another minute or so, until evenly browned.
  • Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside while you make the marinara sauce.

Making the Marinara Sauce:

  • In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of olive oil if needed. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt. Cook over medium-low heat for 2–3 minutes, until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
  • Stir in the oregano and basil, and cook for an additional minute to release the flavors of the herbs.
  • Add the tomato sauce and water, bringing the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer.
  • Carefully return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer for 15–20 minutes, turning them halfway through, until they are fully cooked through.

Serve and enjoy!
