CRACKER BARREL SAWMILL GRAVY

Cracker Barrel’s Sawmill Gravy is the perfect topping for biscuits and chicken-fried steak. This rich white gravy, made with bacon grease and seasoned with plenty of black pepper, is the epitome of soul-satisfying Southern comfort food.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 tablespoons bacon grease
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Heat the bacon grease in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat.
  • Once melted, add the flour and cook for about 1 minute, until it becomes fragrant, like pie dough.
  • Slowly pour in the milk or heavy cream, whisking continuously until the gravy thickens.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve over biscuits or chicken-fried steak.
