Waffles, those golden-brown, crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside treats, are the perfect breakfast, brunch, or dessert. Whether you prefer them plain, topped with fruit and syrup, or smothered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce, waffles are always a crowd-pleaser. In this recipe, you’ll learn how to make a classic waffle dough that’s easy to prepare and yields delicious results.
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
INGREDIENTS (MAKES APPROX. 12 HEART-SHAPED WAFFLES)
- 4 medium eggs
- 400 g all-purpose flour (or spelt flour, type 630)
- 300 ml milk
- 180 g sugar
- 80 ml neutral vegetable oil (such as sunflower or rapeseed oil)
Alternatively, use 100 g soft butter - 1 packet Bourbon vanilla sugar (8 g)
- 1 packet baking powder (16 g)
- A pinch of salt
DIRECTIONS
- In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients: flour, baking powder, vanilla sugar, sugar, milk, vegetable oil (or softened butter), eggs, and salt. Mix everything together for about 30 seconds using a hand mixer or food processor.
Tip: If you prefer, replace the vegetable oil with 100 g of softened butter. In this case, first cream the butter with the sugar and vanilla sugar until smooth, then add the remaining ingredients. - Heat your waffle iron and grease it with a little neutral vegetable oil, if needed. Let the batter rest while the waffle iron heats up.
Tip: You can prepare the waffle batter in advance and store it in the fridge for several hours until you’re ready to bake. - For each heart-shaped waffle, pour about 50 ml of batter onto the center of the waffle iron and bake.
Tip: To keep waffles warm, place them in the oven at 60°C (top/bottom heat). Avoid using convection heat, as it may dry them out. - Serve the finished waffles traditionally with hot cherries and fresh cream, or enjoy them cold—they stay soft and fluffy for a long time.
Tip: Cold waffles can be reheated in a toaster or in the oven at 60°C (top/bottom heat).
I hope you enjoy this waffle recipe and have a delightful meal!
