This homemade tomato sauce is a must-have for everything from simple pasta dishes to more impressive meals like our incredible Meatballs Marinara. There’s something about making it that sparks inspiration to create even more delicious dishes. This marinara sauce has a way of doing that!
INGREDIENTS:
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 1 sweet onion, finely chopped
- 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- ¼ teaspoon red chili flakes
- 2 (28 oz) cans San Marzano tomatoes
- ¼ cup red wine
- 2 sprigs fresh basil
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
DIRECTIONS:
- In a thick-bottomed soup pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, and chili flakes, sautéing until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Stir in the tomatoes, red wine, basil, bay leaves, and oregano. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Remove and discard the bay leaves and basil. Use a potato masher to mash the sauce to your desired consistency.
- Stir in the balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
- Use the sauce in your favorite recipe, or store it in an airtight container for up to one week.
