INGREDIENTS

Makes 24 cookies

Cookies

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (410 g)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (150 g)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup sour cream (115 g)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (320 g)
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Food coloring, for decorating
  • Sprinkles, for decorating

PREPARATION

  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • Cream the Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, use an electric hand mixer to cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the egg and mix until fully incorporated, then blend in the sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth. Gradually add the flour mixture, about a third at a time, mixing until just combined.
  • Chill the Dough: Lightly flour a work surface and turn out the dough. Form the dough into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • Preheat the Oven: Set the oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll and Cut the Cookies: Remove the dough from the fridge and discard the plastic wrap. Lightly flour your work surface again and roll out the dough to about ½-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter or glass to cut out circles.
  • Bake: Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each. Bake for about 8 minutes, until the bottoms are golden and the tops are still pale. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Prepare the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric hand mixer until fluffy. Sift in the powdered sugar and mix until incorporated. Add the milk and continue mixing until smooth and velvety. Add food coloring if desired.
  • Decorate: Once the cookies are cool, frost them and add sprinkles or any other decorations.

Enjoy!
