INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef (93% lean)
  • 1/4 cup red wine (or water as a substitute)
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (28 oz) can petite diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • Red pepper flakes (optional, to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Heat oil and butter in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat.
  • Sauté the onion for 4-5 minutes, until translucent with a slight golden color.
  • Push the onions to the side, then add the ground beef. Sear for 2 minutes on one side, flip, and sear the other side before breaking it into pieces for even browning.
  • Deglaze the pan with red wine or water, letting the liquid cook off. Add garlic and stir until fragrant.
  • Stir in the petite diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, salt, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  • Lower the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta, or toss it with spaghetti for the noodles to absorb the flavors.
