MUST SEE STOPS ALONG MINNESOTA’S NORTH SHORE

Minnesota’s North Shore is my absolute favorite spot in the state. We’ve had the pleasure of visiting many times, both in the summer and winter, and it never fails to amaze me, no matter the season. Here’s a complete recap of the must-see stops along Minnesota’s North Shore. Happy exploring!

Where we stayed

I’ve never had so many requests about a place we’ve stayed as I have for this spot! I booked this VRBO in Tofte, MN, because it offered a central location along the North Shore, and it was perfect for our two-night stay. The cabin had plenty of space for three couples, and we had a great time relaxing by the fire pit and exploring the incredible cove on the property. Just take a look at the photos—SO, SO, SO AMAZING!

We’ve also had the chance to stay in one of the amazing Klarhet domes in Lutsen. Situated right next to the ski resort, this spot is perfect for any season and offers one of the most unique accommodations we’ve ever experienced! It’s ideal for a couple (or two, as some domes feature lofted bed space!). The best part? Each dome comes with its own private bathroom, adding to the overall comfort and convenience.

Walk along the black sand beach

The black sand beach is by far the most unique spot along the North Shore. The sand gets its striking color from iron ore dumping into the lake, which created a man-made peninsula and beach. It was once privately owned, but in recent years, it has become a public beach complete with picnic tables and fire pits. It’s such a cool and fascinating place to visit!

Take in the view at Palisade Head

I think Palisade Head is my favorite spot along Minnesota’s North Shore. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and it’s hard to believe you’re in Minnesota when you’re there! Drive up to the parking lot, then embark on an adventure along the cliffs for the most incredible views. It’s truly a must-see destination!

Hike to Bean and Bear Lake

My all-time favorite hike on Minnesota’s North Shore is to Bean and Bear Lake. It’s a fantastic trail, but make sure to set aside plenty of time for it, as it’s about 6.5 miles and takes around 3 hours to complete. It’s one of the more strenuous hikes on the North Shore, but the views are totally worth it! You can hike down to the lakes, but be sure to also visit the lookout at the end of the trail—it’s absolutely gorgeous. If you’re planning ahead, you can even camp here, making it a perfect overnight adventure.

Take a hike at Tettegouche State Park

Tettegouche State Park is one of the more popular stops along the North Shore for hiking, but it’s still peaceful enough not to feel overcrowded. There are plenty of hikes you can do without needing to pay an entrance fee, and you can grab maps of them at the visitor’s center. We chose to hike to High Falls, and YOU SHOULD TOO! Make sure to stop at the Lower Falls on your way up, then continue past High Falls to the bridge—it’s absolutely beautiful. Just a heads up, this trail has a lot of stairs, so it’s definitely a more strenuous hike on the trip, but totally worth it for the views!

Cure your sweet tooth at Betty’s Pies

Another top recommended spot from all of you is Betty’s Pies! It’s a Minnesota staple and draws in people from all over. I would HIGHLY recommend the blueberry pie with ice cream—it’s amazing! But if you’re feeling adventurous, definitely try a pie shake! It’s exactly what it sounds like: pie blended with ice cream and milk. Cole loved his, and I bet you will too!

Shop local at North 61

The newest store along the North Shore is North 61, named after Highway 61. I absolutely love the clothes from here—I even have one of their “Go North” shirts! Not only can you shop for stylish pieces, but you can also pet their adorable shop dog, grab some shave ice, and enjoy playing outdoor games. It’s a fun stop for sure!

Take a break at Schroeder Baking Company

Want the best caramel roll ever? Stop by Schroeder Baking Company for homemade baked goods and malts. It’s also a fantastic spot for coffee! Whether you’re in need of a driving break or just craving something sweet, this place is a must-stop—no matter the time of day.

Eat pizza at Coho Cafe

Our VRBO was located near Tofte, so we decided to grab dinner at Coho Cafe. This spot makes its own delicious pizzas, along with fresh salads and sandwiches. It was super busy when we visited, so we opted to order some pizzas to take and bake at home. The pizzas were really good, but be sure to plan enough time if you want to dine in—it’s not a quick stop!

Get last minute gear at Water’s Edge Trading Company

While we were waiting for our pizzas, we decided to do some shopping at Water’s Edge Trading Company next door. The owner is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the area. If you’re looking for outdoor gear, clothes, or souvenirs, this is the place to go! They carry all the top name brands, so you’re sure to find something great.

Spend a day exploring Grand Marais

Grand Marais was our final destination along the North Shore, and we spent most of our second day there, soaking in everything from shopping and eating to exploring the shore.
