AUSTRIAN MULLED STEWED PLUMS 

Austrian Mulled Stewed Plums is a delightful winter warmer that blends the sweet and tart flavors of plums with the comforting spice of warming winter spices. This traditional Austrian recipe is perfect for cozy evenings, holiday gatherings, or simply a treat for yourself.

INGREDIENTS

  • 600 g prune plums
  • 50 – 70 g sugar
  • 300 ml red wine
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 shot rum

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Slice the vanilla bean open and scrape out the seeds. Wash, pit, and halve the plums.
  • In a pot over medium heat, allow the sugar to caramelize until it turns golden brown.
  • Add the red wine, cinnamon stick, and vanilla seeds (and pod) to the pot. Let it cook for about 1 minute.
  • Stir in the orange juice and plums, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer until the mixture thickens slightly.
  • Once thickened, stir in the rum and remove from heat. Allow the mulled plums to cool to room temperature.
  • Refrigerate overnight for the flavors to meld.

For longer storage, you can fill the hot mulled plums into sterilized glass jars and keep them in a dark place for up to 3 months.
