DIRECTION
I began by arranging 15 paint sticks on some newspaper I placed on my table. To create each star, you’ll need 5 paint sticks. I painted the sticks in three colors: 5 red, 5 blue, and 5 white.
Allow your paint sticks to dry completely before you start sanding and distressing them. Once they’re dry, use a sanding sponge or sandpaper to distress the edges.
Next, apply your antiquing glaze or wax to the edges of the paint sticks. I found that spritzing my sticks with water before adding the glaze or wax helped achieve the desired finish (you can also use a damp rag for this).
Now, begin arranging your sticks to form stars, remembering that you’ll need 5 sticks for each star. Use a hot glue gun to secure the sticks and finalize the stars. You can also add raffia, ribbon, or twine to embellish them.
Get creative with this project—invite the kids to help paint the sticks, and be sure to share pictures of your stars with us; we love seeing your creations!
