I recently discovered the joy of creating yarn flowers with a loom, and I’m absolutely loving it! These “loom blooms” are not only beautiful but also simple and so much fun to make. They’re a perfect craft project to enjoy with kids and a great way to use up leftover yarn. Don’t forget to check out the full video tutorial below!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS PROJECT
- Flower Loom (Available at craft stores for just a few dollars)
- Loom Hook (Often included with the loom)
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Yarn (The example uses Red Heart Super Saver)
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE A YARN FLOWER
- Anchor the Yarn: Locate the peg on the side of the loom, known as the “anchor peg.” Leave about 4 inches of yarn and tie it securely to this peg.
- Begin Wrapping the Yarn:
- Wrap the yarn around the peg directly across from the anchor peg.
- Continue wrapping clockwise, always moving to the peg on the right.
- Wrap all the way around the loom, completing one full layer of petals.
- Add Layers:
- Push the first layer down using the hook tool if needed.
- Repeat the wrapping process to create a second layer, then push it down as well.
- Wrap a third and final layer, and push it down.
- Secure the Yarn:
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail equal in length to the initial one.
- Flip the loom over and pull both yarn tails to the back (remove one tail from the anchor peg).
- Tie the tails securely in place, making at least three knots for stability.
- Create the Flower Center:
- Choose a yarn color for the flower’s center (it can match or contrast the petals).
- Thread the tapestry needle with the center yarn, keeping the ends even.
- From the back of the loom, bring the needle up between two petals. Insert the needle back into the loom across the petal space, creating a straight line.
- Form a Design:
- Repeat the process to form a “plus sign” in the flower center.
- Then, overlay it with an “X” to create a star-like design.
- Continue until all spaces between petals are filled with the center yarn.
- Final Knots:
- Flip the loom over again and knot the center yarn securely.
- Leave the tails if you plan to attach the flower to something, or trim them for a finished look.
- Remove the Flower:
- Depending on your loom, either remove the pegs to release the flower or use the hook tool to lift each petal off the pegs.
- Work all the way around until the flower is free.
