DIY FALL WREATH

This year, I wanted to add a wreath to our fall decor that would keep a natural look and seamlessly blend with my color scheme. With fields of wheat stretching all around our place, it felt perfect to create a wreath from this abundant resource!

Equipped with garden shears, I hand-harvested wheat that had been blown over and damaged by the wind, carefully gathering it to bring home on our seven-hour drive. The wheat I collected was a bearded variety, which, when I began crafting, gave the wreath a bit of a “fluffy” look. I decided to take it apart and spent hours trimming off the “beard” for a more refined, delicate appearance.

To build the wreath, I used a 16-inch cardboard form from Michaels along with paddle wire for secure binding. Floral tape was another option, but I opted for the wire so the wreath could withstand outdoor conditions without worrying about tape peeling off in changing weather.

DIY FALL WREATH MATERIALS

  • Wire Cutters
  • Paddle Wire
  • Wreath Form
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Floral Tape (optional)
  • Dried Wheat

DIRECTIONS

Prepare the Wheat: Trim the wheat stalks down to about 3 inches for easier handling. If your wheat is bearded, trim it to create a more delicate look.

Start Wrapping: Take your wreath form and secure a small bunch of wheat tightly with paddle wire. Wrap tightly enough to hold the wheat securely, but not so tight that it cuts into the stalks.

Keep the Wire Attached: Leave your wire attached to the spool for continuous wrapping. Gradually add more bunches of wheat as you go to build up the shape and fullness.

Cover All Areas: Position wheat bunches along the outer, inner, and central parts of the form. Make sure to cover all areas of the wreath, trimming stalks as needed to keep the wreath even and well-shaped.

Complete the Base Layer: Continue adding and wrapping wheat around the form until it’s entirely covered.

Final Touches: Once you reach the end, add smaller bunches of wheat to finish the design without crushing the wheat as you secure the final touches.

Secure the Wire: Cut the paddle wire from the spool, wrapping it tightly around the form to hold everything in place.

Add a Bow: Attach a bow to complete the wreath and enjoy your beautiful fall decoration!
