CHEWY SUGAR COOKIES

The Ultimate Chewy Sugar Cookies – delicious on their own, but I couldn’t resist adding frosting! This recipe is absolutely perfect!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk (see notes for substitute)
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar for decorating

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, then add just enough buttermilk to moisten the dough without making it too wet. The dough should be soft (about 2 tablespoons of buttermilk).
  • Roll tablespoons of dough into balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Using a brush or your fingers, lightly moisten the top of each cookie with the remaining buttermilk, then gently flatten the tops. Sprinkle with raw sugar or colored sprinkles if desired.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are barely golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes: For a buttermilk substitute, add 3/4 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar to 1/4 cup milk and let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
