HOW TO MAKE FREEZER APPLE PIE FILLING

Craving warm apple pie but short on time? Making a batch of homemade freezer apple pie filling is a fantastic solution. This simple guide will walk you through the process, ensuring you have a delicious and convenient base for pies, crisps, crumbles, and more whenever the craving strikes.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups (4–5 large) tart baking apples (Cortland are our favorite)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples. I like to slice them thinly and then cut the slices into thirds for diced pieces.
  • In a large bowl, toss the apples with 1/2 cup of sugar and the cinnamon until well coated.
  • Pour the apples into the unbaked pie crust.
  • In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar with the flour. Add the butter and use your hands to mix until the mixture becomes crumbly. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake at 450°F for 10 minutes. Then, reduce the temperature to 350°F and continue baking for 30 minutes. Avoid opening the oven during this time—just adjust the temperature after the first 10 minutes and reset the timer.
  • Enjoy your homemade apple pie!

NOTES

To make apple pie kits, follow the recipe but freeze the components separately. Place the crumb topping in a sandwich bag and the apple filling in a quart-sized bag. Freeze until you’re ready to bake. You can bake the pie with the filling frozen, or thaw it first—either way, you’re in for a delicious treat!
