These irresistible chess squares are sweet, rich, and gooey! With the help of a boxed cake mix, they’re quick and simple to make!
INGREDIENTS
For the Crust:
- 1 package (15.25 oz or 18.25 oz) yellow cake mix*
- 3/4 cup or 1 cup (170g or 226g) unsalted butter, melted*
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 1 cup (approximately 120g) finely chopped nuts
For the Filling:
- 16 ounces (454g) cream cheese, at room temperature
- 16 ounces (454g) confectioners’ sugar
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature

INSTRUCTIONS
To Make the Crust:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9″ x 13″ x 2″ baking pan.
- In a bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, and egg. Stir in the nuts (the mixture will be thick).
- Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
To Make the Filling:
- Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar until smooth and well-combined.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing until fully incorporated after each addition.
- Pour the cream cheese mixture over the crust and spread it evenly.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the filling is set.
Notes:
Cake mixes have become smaller over time. For simplicity, I recommend using a 15.25-ounce cake mix and 3/4 cup of butter. If using the original 18.25-ounce cake mix, you’ll need to use 1 cup butter and adjust by using part of another cake mix to make up for the missing ounces.
