Chapati Flatbread – A simple and delicious flatbread recipe made with just three basic ingredients. Also called roti, this versatile bread is enjoyed in India, East Africa, and beyond.
INGREDIENTS
- 3 cups all-purpose flour*
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, water, and salt. Mix until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until it becomes soft and smooth.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rest for about 1 hour.
- Preheat a lightly oiled skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each piece into a round, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
- Place a rolled-out chapati on the hot skillet. Cook for 30–60 seconds, or until golden brown spots appear on the bottom. Flip and cook the other side until similar spots form. If a large bubble forms, gently press it down.
- Transfer the cooked chapatis to a serving plate and cover them until ready to serve.
NOTES
*You can substitute up to half the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. Using more than this may affect the dough’s texture and hydration.
