This simple recipe for the ultimate Cream Cheese Frosting creates the smoothest, richest frosting you’ve ever tried. Made with real cream cheese and basic ingredients, it brings a perfect balance of tangy and sweet to every bite. Ideal for topping cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and more, this homemade version outshines even the best store-bought cream cheese frosting.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 package (8 ounces) full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- ¼ cup (half of a stick or 4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 3 – 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, butter, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well as you go. Adjust the amount of powdered sugar until you reach your desired frosting consistency (about 3 ½ cups works well).
- This amount of frosting is enough to cover a 13×9-inch cake or about 24 cupcakes. For a two-layer cake, consider doubling the recipe for extra frosting.
- For a glaze, reduce the powdered sugar and gradually add milk (start with 1 tablespoon at a time) until you achieve the desired consistency.
